Living Library: Remembering Washington When Things Worked
he author will tell about a time a long time ago in a galaxy far, far away when there was a marvelous place called Washington, DC, where two parties contested elections by saying “we think our policies are best and we’d appreciate your vote” and when they lost they buckled down and tried again. People came to Congress with the purpose of doing the public business and passed legislation like the Clean Air and Water Acts, the Bitonal Emergencies Act, the Foreign Corrupt Practices Act, and dozens of important laws. He will describe his experiences working on the Hill and why he thinks it worked then and doesn’t now.
