GO Adams, Go!

The Adams County Library System is pleased to partner with WellSpan Health for the third straight year of “Get Outdoors (GO) Adams!”  GO Adams is an outdoor scavenger hunt program. This year the theme is “GO and Explore the Universe,” in line with the ACLS Summer Quest theme “A Universe of Stories.”  Children and families who participated in the past have been eagerly awaiting this year’s incarnation.
As of June 1, fifteen wooden posts were placed around Adams County, each with a distinctive space-themed etching on the top.  Families can stop by any Adams County Library to register for our Summer Quest program where they earn prizes by reading and doing activities, and pick up the GO Adams Sky Map and rubbing sheet. This booklet gives step by step directions to each post. Once a post is located, children make a rubbing of the etching, proving they found it. These posts are spread throughout the county in locations ranging from the Big Dipper etching in Oakside Park in Biglerville to the Hubble Space Telescope etching in Caledonia State Park.  Walks are rated as easy, moderate and hard. The guide even tells you if the walk will be dog or stroller friendly!  It is a fantastic way to explore our beautiful county, get some exercise, and learn some fun space facts. The Sky Map also includes book recommendations related to each etching.
Families can embark on as few or as many expeditions as they would like, but the more they complete, the more chances they have to win prizes. Plus, if they find all fifteen, they get the satisfaction of finishing the hunt. Posts will remain through Saturday, August 10, and rubbing sheets are due at any Adams County Library by August 18. If at least three of the fifteen rubbings are completed the entrant will receive a participation reward. If they complete four or more, they earn chances in a raffle to win one of the top three county-wide grand prizes.   Check out the Get Outdoors (GO) Adams Facebook page to see the smiling faces of last year’s winners and their prizes. The Facebook page also offers helpful hints and updates from participants and organizers. These range from updates on conditions of the area after inclement weather, to suggestions on how to create the best rubbings (colored pencils). There is a plethora of information at www.goadams.org as well, including a map of all the post locations.
Last year Adams County Libraries handed out 1,680 rubbing sheets, and 136 kids each walked at least 12.95 miles to track down all fifteen posts.  Every year Adams County Library staff members hear glowing testimonials from children and families about how enjoyable these hikes were, and how they discovered new, interesting places in the county. As the Sky Map says, “get outdoors, have fun, and explore the universe!”
