My first job out of college was an English, Public Speaking and Drama high school teacher, so I am thrilled to share that the Adams County Library System is starting a new adventure to fulfill a growing need in our community: an afterschool program for middle and high school students!
Reaching Our Community (R.O.C.) After School will:
1. Expand the school day through tutoring and homework time, and connections with teachers and administrators.
2. Ignite a passion for Science, Technology, Engineering, Art and Math through creative STEAM programming.
3. Encourage social-emotional learning through activities that foster self-awareness, confidence and community.
The Harbaugh~Thomas Foundation has generously pledged $65,000 this year and the next two years towards building this program. We’re seeking financial support from the community to raise $27,600 by February 28, 2019 so that we can begin offering R.O.C. After School in April 2019 in Biglerville. Will you help us to launch this program? We’re starting in Biglerville, and we’re working diligently to raise money to expand R.O.C. After School to Gettysburg.
Your gift of any amount, which is tax deductible, will help us to reach an important segment of our population: the youth in Adams County, our future. You can send a check, donate at a library branch, call Vicki at 717.334.0163 to make a credit card payment, or pay through our website by clicking the Donate Now button at adamslibrary.org. Simply note that you are choosing to be the foundation for R.O.C After School. Thank you for your consideration!
A Roof Update: “Raising the Roof” for the Gettysburg Library
We continue to raise funds for a new roof for the Gettysburg Library. As I wrote in November, unfortunately, we have sprung not one, but four leaks in our roof. We thought it was an unbudgeted expense of approximately $34,000, but it will be closer to $76,000. Thank you for considering a donation to this need. And if you want to help me to write grants, let me know!
A Valentine’s Gift Idea for Your Favorite Reader
We’re thrilled to announce that New York Times Bestselling Author of “Hotel on the Corner of Bitter and Sweet” and “Love and Other Consolation Prizes,” Jamie Ford, will be our special guest at our Third Annual Signature Event! This event raises funds for the Library’s most urgent needs and features a mixer, silent auction, book signing, VIP reception, and keynote by Mr. Ford. The event will occur on September 20 at the Gettysburg Library and tickets can be purchased beginning on February 1st at any ACLS branch or on our website. Hope you can join us!
Save the Date for FunFest: Friday, June 14th!
For the fourth year, ACLS is hosting FunFest, a FREE experience for the entire family. FunFest takes place at the Gettysburg Rec Park and is the kick-off celebration for one of our favorite times of year: Summer Quest! This event is one way for us to support literacy efforts and emphasize the importance of reading early and often to children of all ages. FunFest will feature face painting and balloon artists, food, and activities. If your organization would like to have a booth, contact me at DawnS@AdamsLibrary.org. Save the date!
