Adams County Reads One Book Events Announced

     Are you ready to learn more about “A Piece of the World,” this year’s Adams County Reads One Book selection? Throughout the month of October, the Adams County Library System will host a variety of programs and book discussions focusing on Christina and her world.
     Christina witnessed a multitude of world changing events during her lifetime. For instance, Christina interacted with suffragettes from her community. To understand more about the American women’s suffrage movement, join Dora Townsend as she discusses the history of the movement, focusing on her great-grandmother’s significant contribution to the movement. Dora tells her great-grandmother’s story through excerpts from letters by her great-grandmother. The program takes place on Thursday, October 4 at   6:30pm at the Harbaugh~Thomas Library in Biglerville.
     A few libraries will present programs on the Wyeth family and art techniques. Those interested in learning more about Andrew Wyeth can attend the showing of the new PBS American Masters: Wyeth documentary at the Gettysburg Library and the New Oxford Area Library. Gettysburg’s showing takes place Friday, October 5 at 1pm and also features a make and take bookmark opportunity. New Oxford’s showing will be held Wednesday, October 17th at 11:30am.
     Local historian Tim Smith will present a program on John Burns, “Gettysburg’s Hero,” whose portrait was painted by N.C. Wyeth; catch this program on Wednesday, October 10th at 6:30pm at the Gettysburg Library.
     The Harbaugh~Thomas Library will host a coloring party for all ages on Thursday, October 11th, from 1pm-5pm. And, Carroll Valley Library will host the program Still Life Drawing with Dorothea at 6pm on Thursday, October 11th.
     Join fellow community members for book discussions of the book at each library. On Thursday, October 4th at 4pm, Littlestown will hold its discussion and an Art Work Coloring Party. Discuss the book at New Oxford on Thursday, October 11th at 10am; Carroll Valley Library on Monday, October 15th at 7pm; Harbaugh~Thomas Library on Thursday, October 18th at 6:30pm; and the Trone Memorial Library of East Berlin on Tuesday, November 27th at 7pm. In Gettysburg, join the discussion at 12pm on Wednesday, October 24th; pizza will be served. Or, come to Gettysburg on Wednesday, October 24th at 7pm for the book discussion; light refreshments will be served.

The brochure lists each program and book discussion; provides information on the author Christina Baker Kline and the Wyeth family; a suggested reading list; book discussion questions; and further places to explore online and to visit in person.
