Description
Barbara Landis will give a talk about the Carlisle Indian Industrial School (CIIS), the first federally funded off-reservation boarding school for Native American Children, in operation from 1879-1918. Landis will look through the lens of Adams County communities who served as patrons to these children. There were several dozen CIIS students living in Adams County for months at a time. They were on “Outing,” living and working in area households and businesses. Landis will also highlight the ways native peoples have chosen to remember and honor their ancestors who were students at the school.
